Andrzej Taranek (b. 1953, Gdańsk) is a Polish graphic artist, painter, and author. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk, graduating in 1982 in Professor Witold Janowski’s studio. In 2015 he defended his doctoral dissertation “The Landscape of Gdańsk as Cultural Heritage Amid Ongoing Transformations” (Polish: “Krajobraz Gdańska jako dziedzictwo kulturowe wobec zachodzących przemian”) at the Faculty of Graphic Arts. Working across fine art printmaking, drawing, and painting, Taranek often explores the changing urban fabric of Gdańsk, recording architectural details and memory traces in a long‑running drawn journal. He has designed posters, book illustrations, and medals; solo exhibitions include the State Art Gallery in Sopot (2004) and the Archaeological Museum in Gdańsk (2019). Distinctions include the Józef Gielniak competition (1983, 1989) and multiple “Gdańsk Print of the Year” awards from the Gdańsk Society of Friends of Art (1983, 1985, 1989, 1990, 1995), as well as the GTPS Artistic Award (2011) and the 100th Anniversary Medal of the Gdańsk Scientific Society (2022). Works by Taranek are held by the National Museum in Gdańsk, the National Library in Warsaw, and the Ossoliński National Institute in Wrocław, along with private collections across Europe and the United States.
